Video materials on improving communication with patients, cross-cultural aspect (abstract).
Here, you can watch videos presenting the assessment of breathing patterns and therapeutic techniques performed by a physiotherapist on an individual with a large body mass. Palpating bony structures in individuals with increased body mass can be challenging and requires greater focus from the therapist. Explain to your patient that some grips may cause discomfort because you need to exert slightly more force to feel bony elements such as ribs or collarbone. Also, inform them about the importance of assessing their breathing pattern for their health and that palpating areas of the neck, chest, and abdomen is necessary to properly evaluate their pattern. If your patient agrees, you can proceed with the work. If, due to excessive body mass, you cannot directly palpate bony elements, do not give up on assessing the breathing pattern. Instead, try to indirectly assess the respiratory movement in a specific area by evaluating the movement of soft tissue under your hands.
Here are videos covering:
Assessment of breathing patterns in individuals with excessive body mass (video 11, 12)
Mobilization techniques for the diaphragm in individuals with excessive body mass (video 13 – 17)
The videos are enriched with commentary from the narrator.
VIDEO # 11. Assessment of respiratory movement in the neck/chest transition in the sagittal plane in a patient with excess body weight in a seated position
VIDEO #12. Assessment of respiratory movement of the 11th and 12th ribs in a seated position in an overweight individual
VIDEO #13. Assessment of respiratory movement and diaphragm relaxation in a supine position in an overweight individual
VIDEO #14. Relaxation of one dome of the diaphragm in a supine position in an overweight individual
VIDEO #15. Relaxation of one dome of the diaphragm in a side-lying position in an overweight individual
VIDEO #16. Relaxation of the lower areas of the chest and diaphragm according to Rousse in an overweight individual
