Video materials on improving communication with patients, cross-cultural aspect (abstract).
The presented videos will depict an examination taking into account cross-cultural differences. The examination and exercises should be conducted in an atmosphere of calm, respecting the client/patient’s privacy, without rush, and the therapist should demonstrate a high level of empathy, understanding, and professionalism.
The therapist prepares the client/patient for the examination. They explain the nature of the examination and discuss the process of performing functional tests, informing about the use of palpation on certain parts of the body (abdomen) for diagnostic purposes. You can gradually prepare him for this. Pay attention to the therapist-client/patient relationship. Its specificity arises from the type of contact that breaches boundaries defined by socio-cultural norms, such as personal questions or physical contact required during some diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
They also explain how the exerciser should perform a given task with the engagement of the appropriate muscle groups.
The exerciser is forewarned that the physiotherapist must observe the way the task is performed and correct the positioning of certain body parts.
To conduct functional diagnostics and exercises, you should obtain the client’s/patient’s approval.
If the client/patient, due to cultural differences, requires intimacy, it is important to provide an independent room, and attention may need to be paid to the gender of the physiotherapist.
If you are working with the client/patient on a mat, focus on building relationships. You can wear either a professional or sportswear, demonstrate exercises on the mat without shoes, reducing distance and fostering positive connections.
